Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, announced in late January that new restrictions will be put in place for travelers coming into the country by air. 

According to reports, Trudeau announced that any travelers flying into the country will have to take a mandatory PCR test. They will be forced to quarantine for up to three days, on their own expense. It was reported at the time that the new restrictions will come into effect by the 22nd of February.

The Canadian Premier announced on Friday that the restrictions will include a hotel quarantine requirement. Moreover, PM Trudeau stated, “We’re not trying to punish people, we’re trying to keep people safe”. He added, that these new restrictions will not include truckers and essential workers such as health-workers.

According to reports, Trudeau added that the latest measures will help to ensure a stop to “the spread of COVID-19 and new variants”. Moreover, travelers with negative test reports will be permitted to quarantine at home under “surveillance and enforcement” however, in the likelihood of a positive report will be expected to quarantine in government facilities.

According to reports, government officials and ministers have explained that the travelers are expected to take three COVID-19 tests. The first of which is to be taken within 72 hours of expected arrival while, the second will be taken upon arrival at the Canadian airport and/or border (for land travel).

Health Minister Patty Hajdu, speaking in a press conference stated, that hotel quarantine is mandatory for all travelers. She elaborated that the government will provide a list of hotels on a booking site as late as 18th February and that would be near the airports in the four cities currently open for international flights. The cities include Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal, respectively.

Hajdu added that while the cost of the hotel stay “may vary slightly” by location, it will include costs associated with the room, food, cleaning, infection prevention and control measures, and security as well as transportation.”

Minister for Public Safety Bill Blair said that the travelers should understand that it is their responsibility to follow the protocols put in place.

Moreover, the latest restrictions are expected in addition to the mandatory 14-day quarantine for people arriving in Canada. According to reports, Trudeau said on Tuesday that the government has means to ensure compliance and those failing to meet the set standards are likely to be fined up to $3,000 per traveler, as well as other penalties.
