Karachi, 29th December: Pakistan has reported the first confirmed case of the new strain of coronavirus, which has started surging from the UK.

Baaghi TV: Pakistan has reported its first confirmed cases of COVID-19 strain detected in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

According to the Sindh health department, 12 samples were taken for genotyping among the UK returnees out of which six were positive and three showed the new variant of the virus in the first phase.

Meeran Yousuf, spokesperson for the Sindh health department said, “The genotyping showed 95 per cent match of the new variant from the UK. These samples will go through another phase of genotyping.”

“Meanwhile, the contact tracing of these patients is in process and their contacts are also being isolated,” she said.

According to a study by the Centre for Mathematical Modelling of Infectious Diseases at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK, the new variant of COVID-19 is on average 56 per cent more contagious than the original version. It is spreading fast and is likely to boost hospitalisations and deaths.

“The increase in transmissibility of new variant is likely to lead to a large increase in incidence, with Covid-19 hospitalisations and deaths projected to reach higher levels in 2021 than were observed in 2020, even if regional tiered restrictions implemented before 19 December are maintained,” said researchers.
