Central Punjab Wins National T20 Cup 2nd XI Title

Lahore, 8th October 2020: In the last league match played at Qaddafi Stadium, Lahore, Central Punjab after defeating Northern by 7 wickets, has made the 2nd XI title its own. Central Punjab topped the table after winning 4 out of its 5 matches and gaining 8 points in all.

During the match played on Thursday, the top-ranked team with the help of Junaid Ali’s unbeaten 66, achieved the target of 134 with the loss of three wickets. Captain Nauman Anwar was out for 26 runs off 13 balls. Athar Mahmood of Northern had two wickets to his name.

When Northern won the toss and chose to bat first, they were able to score just 133 runs in the allotted 20 overs, for the loss of 8 wickets. Aamer Jamal on 38 not out remained the top scorer. Waqas Maqsood took 3 and Mohammad Ali took 2 wickets.

Central Punjab Captain Nauman Anwar said that it is a pleasant experience to be able to play top-class critical in the midst of tough coronavirus related protocols. He said that the ingredients to the success of Central Punjab were the perfect combinations, and responsible play by every member of the squad. He further said that all teams in the event were very good, which made for tough contests, while the match against traditional rivals Sindh went down to the last over, the success in which will remain his best memory of the tournament.

Central Punjab Head Coach Akram Raza said that the practice camp held ahead of the tournament greatly helped the players steel their nerves against the threat of COVID19. He said he has worked with many of the same boys last year as well which benefitted him greatly.

Akram Raza said that he is very happy with the inclusion of his team’s stand-out performer Muhammad Akhlaq in the First XI squad. While wishing him the best, he said that the right-hander is a very talented cricketer and he is sure he will perform well in the First XI as well.

At the conclusion of the event, Central Punjab was first with 8 points, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab were second and third respectively with 6 points each, Sindh was fourth, Balochistan 5th, and Northern 6th.

Balochistan’s 17 year old batsman Abdul Wahid Bangalzai scored the most, 235 runs, while Central Punjab’s Kamran Afzal got the most, 8 wickets.
