The Incident
Kirk had been speaking for nearly 20 minutes as part of his “American Comeback Tour”, which included multiple campus stops across the country. Witnesses said he was in the middle of a heated exchange with a student on the issue of mass shootings when the gunfire erupted.
Authorities confirmed that the shot came from the direction of UVU’s Losee Center building, located about 100–200 yards from the event courtyard. Over 3,000 people were in attendance, and six police officers were stationed at the venue. Kirk’s private security was also present.
The Suspect
Confusion surrounded the suspect’s identity. Utah police initially detained a “person of interest” but later released him after finding no connection to the shooting. Officials described the shooter as wearing all-black clothing. No other injuries were reported.
