Chinese Counsel General’s Visit to Gujrat and Mian Akbar House

I welcome His Excellency and his better half, the lady, and other members of the Chinese entourage. Excellency, you are welcome to the land of the pure and the home of the brave. Gujrat is a very old city which has witnessed enormous vicissitudes with time. History bears testimony to the fact that this place has been the soul of the valiant soldiers — martyrs with the highest gallantry awards. General Raheel Shareef and General Hameed were the erstwhile Chiefs of Staff belonging to this part of Punjab.

Alexander the Great was known to have travelled through this region and is believed to have fought Raja Porus.

It is my singular privilege and honour to welcome you to GT and Mian Akbar House. Our rock-solid friendship with China now transcends time and space.

Our iron brotherhood with China is beyond the shadow of doubt.

China and Pakistan have been partners in the field of bilateral, multi-pronged and multi-faceted activities in the fields of business, science, farming, and all sorts of help in the fields of technology. China’s help during the Covid times is a case in point, when seventy container loads of Covid vaccines arrived in Pakistan just a few years ago.

President Xi’s bold, progressive approach in helping the smaller countries may be regarded as China’s forthright and invaluable contribution with regard to uplifting the socio-economic status of such recipient countries.

I know that China is doing its best with regard to climate change and global warming. Sadly enough, we suffer the grave and grimmer consequences of a rapidly changing climate. The torrid hot summers bring torrents and now cloudbursts — an orographic phenomenon, mainly the air that comes from the Himalayan region and which lifts in the hilly areas of Pakistan, bursting vigorously after condensation into clouds.

As a former Mayor of this city, it provides me with a chance to be looking towards our most favoured allies for help in the field of heavy earth-moving Chinese machinery that could alleviate the suffering of our people. The recent flooding of our city has been devastating. It rendered many homeless, hundreds marooned, and many helpless. I request you to help us in the field of waste management, sewerage and sewage solutions. If we could have engineers who could build and overhaul our sanitation system, we would appreciate it if any help is granted.

We have today with us the luminaries — the literati, the entrepreneurs, and a galaxy of people from various fields.

Over the last few years, one of the most promising and reassuring aspects of our bilateral relations is the increasing contacts between the peoples of our two countries. The warmth at the top echelons of leadership is mirrored by sentiments of love and fraternity between our masses. I quote: “With over 40 provinces and cities in sister relationships, I am confident that linkages between our peoples would deepen, and the finest traditions of our friendship would be passed on to our future generations.”
