The Congress party has sharply reacted to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s accusation that the Opposition indulges in “drama,” declaring that Modi himself is the “biggest dramabaaz” and accusing his government of systematically trampling parliamentary norms for over a decade.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, in a statement on X, said that rather than addressing the real issues confronting ordinary Indians, Narendra Modi once again delivered his familiar “dramebazi speech,” deflecting attention from public grievances.
Kharge said the BJP government has “bulldozed parliamentary decorum and procedures for the last 11 years,” adding that the list of such violations is long and widely known. He said the Modi regime must “end this drama of distraction” and engage in meaningful debate on unemployment, inflation, widening economic inequality, and what he described as the ongoing loot of the country’s resources.
Earlier, Narendra Modi had stated that Parliament is “a place for delivery, not drama” at the start of the Winter Session. However, the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice within the first hour amid Opposition protests.
Kharge also highlighted that during the previous Monsoon Session, at least 12 Bills were rushed through — some passed in less than 15 minutes and some without any debate. He reminded the public of how the Modi government had earlier bulldozed “anti-farmer black laws,” GST legislation, and bills such as the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita without proper parliamentary scrutiny.
Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Jairam Ramesh also criticised Modi, calling the Prime Minister’s remarks “hypocritical.” He said “the biggest dramabaaz of them all is talking of drama,” openly holding Modi responsible for the frequent disruptions in Parliament.
Ramesh said it is Modi’s “stubborn refusal” to allow the Opposition to raise urgent public issues that prevents smooth functioning of Parliament. “He always wants to have his way without giving the Opposition even the basic opportunity to have its say,” he added.
