Diamer Bhasha Dam: A brief history of events

MIRPUR (AJK): Mar 25 (APP): The WAPDA Chairman visited the site for Diamer Bhasha Dam and Dasu Hydropower Project to review construction work. He was briefed that work is ongoing at 8 different sites of the project.

The construction sites include an access tunnel, access roads, and upstream and downstream cable bridges. Construction work has also commenced on the 21 MW Tangir Hydropower Project, meant for providing electricity during the construction phase of Diamer Basha Dam.

The WAPDA Chairman noted that construction work goes despite the COVID19 pandemic that has left its mark the world over. He stressed the importance of reaching milestones on time. The Chairman also opened the newly constructed cable way bridge across River Indus. The other three bridges are scheduled for completion in April and May. The pontoon bridge across River Indus was completed ahead of schedule in December for transport of machinery and workforce.

Diamer Basha Dam is set to have a gross water storage capacity of 8.1 MAF to irrigate 1.23 million acres of additional land. With installed power generation capacity of 4500 MW, the project will provide more than 18 billion units per annum to the National Grid. Earlier, WAPDA Chairman also witnessed construction activity on Dasu Hydropower Project Stage-I, being built across River Indus upstream Dasu town in Kohistan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

After river diversion works are completed by the year end, the mighty Indus would pass through two diversion tunnels, making it possible to construct the dam.
