Controversial cleric Sufi Muhammad passes away.

Maulana Sufi Muhanmmad, founder of the banned Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) passed away on Thursday.

According to reports of Baaghitv, Maulana Sufi Muhammad, founder of proscribed Tehreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM), which exercised control over the parts of Malakand division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province for two decades passed away on Thursday at the age of 86.

He was the father in law of banned Tehreek e Taliban Pakistan chief Mullah Fazalullah and pursued imposition of Shariah Law for two decades.

He was born in 1933 in Maidan, Lower Dir, Sufi Muhammad received his religious education from a local madrassa and was an active member of the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) in the 1980s.

His relation with state got soured in the 2009 and 2010 when he got engaged in Verbal diatribe against Pakistan Peoples Party government led by President Asif Ali Zardari. During that time, Situation got out of control of civil government and Pakistan Army was called out. Pakistan Army conducted successful operation against militants in 2009. Following those operations, he was arrested on charges of sedition, waging war against Pakistan, attack on state installations, conspiracy against Pakistan.

Peshawar High Court released him in January 2018. PHC Justice Waqar Ahmad Seth noted that the accused was being released on bail mainly on medical grounds and due to delay in commencement of his trial.
