Shanghai: China is leading the race to develop a vaccine to treat the corona virus. The experimental vaccine, developed in collaboration with local biotech company Synovik, will be the second in China and the third in the world to reach the final stages of testing later this month.

China, the epicenter of the outbreak, has mobilized its government, military and private sector to fight the epidemic. The epidemic has so far killed more than half a million people. According to a foreign news agency, many other countries, including the United States, are working with the private sector to develop a vaccine to win the race, while China faces many challenges. China’s success in controlling the epidemic has made it difficult for it to conduct large-scale vaccine experiments, with only a handful of countries supporting it.

Due to past vaccine scandals, China has to convince the world that it has completed all safety and quality arrangements. But China’s command-to-economy approach, in which the government decides what to prepare and what not, is yielding good results.

A government-run company has completed two vaccine plants on a “war footing” in just a few months, with the Chinese military’s medical research unit working with a private biotech company, Cansino, to develop the vaccine.

Challenging Western industry, China is currently supporting eight of the 19 candidates for vaccine development that are currently undergoing experiments on humans. Foremost among these is the SinoWeek experimental vaccine and the vaccine developed in collaboration with the military and the private company Cansino.

China’s focus is on activated vaccine technologies known for developing vaccines against diseases such as the flu and measles, which could increase their chances of success. In contrast, the US company Moderna and the German companies CureWake and BioNTech are using new technology called Messenger RNA. Through which no such product has been developed yet which has been approved by the regulators.

“This is a good strategy,” said Paul Oft, director of the Vaccine Education Center at a children’s hospital in the US state of Philadelphia. “If I had to choose a safer vaccine, it would be this,” he said. Includes vaccines developed by the Biotech Group.

Two experimental vaccines are currently undergoing final phase 3 trials. One belongs to Sino Farm Company and the other to AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford, while Sino Week will be the third by the end of this month. China has allowed SinoForm and SinoWeek to combine Phase 1 and Phase 2 trials to expedite its process.

The Chinese military’s research center has played a key role in developing the experimental vaccine for casinos. The Chinese military has approved a vaccine for use in its ranks. The vaccine was developed jointly by the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology and the Institute of Military Medical Sciences. Chen Wei, a leading Chinese military scientist, took the lead in vaccinating his team.

What are the challenges faced by China?

The epidemic is largely over in China, but it faces the challenge of conducting large-scale vaccine trials.
Only the United Arab Emirates, Canada, Brazil, Indonesia and Mexico have backed the trials, while neither a major European country nor the United States has shown interest in China’s vaccines, which are focused on their projects.

China will also have to address concerns about the quality of the vaccine and its safety for humans, as it has in the past. In the last few years, there have been several scandals involving substandard vaccines. “China’s National Regulatory Authority is making improvements,” said Jerome Kim, head of the UN’s International Vaccine Institute.

China has introduced a law to regulate the vaccine industry, which imposes heavy penalties on the manufacture and sale of substandard or counterfeit vaccines.
