July 29, 2021: The fourth wave of coronavirus showed no signs of abating as the number of new cases crossed the 4,000 level for the first time in two months, while authorities managed to administer a dose of 1 million vaccines a day.

According to the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), the nerve center of government coordination efforts against the pandemic, the national positivity ratio also reached a worrying 7.8%, the highest during the ongoing Covid19 wave.

In its daily update, the NCOC said that in the last 24 hours, 4,119 people tested positive, bringing the national incidence of the disease to 1,015,827.

The last time the NCOC reported more than 4,000 cases of coronavirus in a single day was on May 22. However, the number of active cases dropped to 56,952, following 7,020 recoveries on Wednesday, the forum said.

In all, 935,742 people have recovered from the disease so far, with a significant recovery rate of more than 90%. In active cases, the NCOC said, 3,286 patients were admitted to dedicated health facilities across 639 couriers across the country, of which 2,98 were in critical condition.

The NCOC said 176 patients had been hospitalized in the past 24 hours, while 294 patients were on ventilators.

The update said that 44 patients in hospitals, including 20 with 39 ventilators, had died in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 23,133 across the country. Most of the deaths, 20, occurred in Sindh, followed by 12 in Punjab.

The country is in the grip of a fourth wave of the disease, fueled by the Indian-origin Delta invention of the coronavirus.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the death rate in Pakistan was between 2.30% and 2.37% in July, compared to 2.17% worldwide in July.

To curb the spread of pandemic, the government implemented a strong vaccination campaign, as well as several standard operating procedures (SOPs). On Tuesday, authorities seized a record 778,000 Covid19 shots.

Planning Minister Asad Omar, who is also the head of the NCOC, said in a tweet that the country would surpass the target of 1 million vaccines a day. On Tuesday, he added, a record 561,000 people got the first jab.
