WASHINGTON: For the first time in United States history, more than 20 million jobs were lost in April, according to the U.S. Department of Labor from jobs which were created in the last decade.

According to the AFP news agency, the unemployment rate in the United States has risen to 14.7 percent from 4.4 percent in March. Unemployment is many times higher than the global financial crisis of 2009. In the United States, 870,000 jobs were lost in March, far more than initially estimated. However, due to the lockdown, business activities were closed in the second half of March.

According to a report by the US Department of Labor, the lockdown has led to the highest unemployment rate in the non-agricultural sector since 1939, while the unemployment rate has risen the most since 1948.

Jobs have been cut sharply in all key industrial sectors, especially in the entertainment and hospitality industries, and these industries have been hit hardest by the lockdown. However, the Labor Department said the report incorrectly identified some workers as employees, although they should have been considered unemployed. If they are counted correctly, the unemployment rate will be as high as 5%.
