Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors condemns Maryam Nawaz's statement #Baaghi

Nov 26, 2021: Officials of Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) have unequivocally condemned the statement of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz Sharif regarding unfair distribution of advertisements in media houses and ban on some media advertisements.

The CPNE has demanded that the PML-N leadership publicly apologize for its past undemocratic and suppressing press freedom. He also demanded that a committee set up by the government should inform the nation through transparent investigation what other steps were taken by the previous governments to suppress the media, influence editorial policy and “massacre” disliked media groups.

In a statement, the CPNE termed the admission of Maryam Nawaz as a charge sheet against the PML-N government, which is now seeking media support and trying to be a flag bearer of freedom of the press and free media.

The statement said that like previous governments, the CPNE has always spoken out against the current government’s measures against press freedom and called for a transparent, acceptable and equitable approach to the distribution of advertisements.

The CPNE demanded that the inquiry committee set up by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry should conduct an impartial inquiry not only into the distribution of advertisements and rewards to favored groups during the PPP and PML-N regimes but also inform masses about the advertising policy of the last three years so that the report of the committee could be accepted by the people and journalistic circles.
