LAHORE: The accountability court approves a 12-day physical remand of Jang/Geo Group CEO Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, on Friday (today).
According to reports of Baaghi TV, Lahore accountability court handed Rehman over to the national accountability bureau (NAB) till March 25.
Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan appeared on behalf of Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman and submitted a power of attorney. Ahsan sought permission to meet Mir Shakeel-ur-Rehman, which the court allowed. Later, the proceedings were adjourned for a while.
Rehman’s lawyer said that NAB did not give any notice to my client, which doesn’t authorize them to arrest him. Arrest warrants have also not been issued yet.
During the hearing today, Ahsan vehemently opposed NAB’s request for physical remand, saying that NAB’s “attitude towards Shakeel-ur-Rehman is based on maliciousness”.
Ahsan, further, said that people refuse to criticize my client; legal procedure was not taken before the businessman was summoned.
According to reports of Baaghi TV, the media tycoon was arrested in Lahore by the anti-corruption watchdog in a case pertaining to the purchase of a 54-kanal land. He purchased the land in Lahore’s Johar Town area during the tenure of Nawaz Sharif as Punjab chief minister in 1986. The land was reportedly acquired in violation of the rules.
Earlier, Mir Shakeel ur Rehman was interrogated for two hours on March 5 and he appeared for the second time today to answer NAB official’s questions. According to sources, the media house owner was unable to answer the questions on which he was detained.
According to sources, instead of answering questions, Rehman continued to threaten NAB by showing off his power and strength. However, the NAB officials arrested Mir Shakeel after he failed to furnish the evidence.
