Lahore, 20th March: The country which is suffering the most number of deaths after China and Italy, is Iran, where at least 1 person is dying in every 10 mins, increasing their death toll to 149 so far.

Nearly 18,500 have been infected and at least 1,284 people have died of Covid-19 in the country, the highest death toll outside of China and Italy.

One of the main reasons for the increasing death toll in Iran is the shortage of medical facilities and the safety gear and kits, which has forced the medics to treat the sick without proper care.

On Thursday Kianush Jahanpur, the health ministry spokesman said the crisis was so severe that Covid-19 was killing at least half a dozen an hour.

The World Health Organisation, however, has warned Iran’s toll was potentially five times higher as the testing has been restricted to the “most severe cases”.

A research conducted by Tehran’s Sharif University has concluded that in the best-case scenario, the death toll in Iran could exceed 12,000 and reach its peak till mid-May, and in the worst-case scenario the death toll can reach up to 3.5 million.

The reason was given for the high number of expected deaths due to the coronavirus is if people ignore the travel restrictions and health guidance they will definitely have to bear the brunt of the effects caused by this disease.

The hospitals in Iran are short of face masks which are only available to those working in the emergency units, their hospitals are all the time full of the patients and so their medical teams are already exhausted.

The healthcare workers in Iran are very worried about their safety as they are being granted only two facial masks per shift which are not enough for them.

The doctors and nurses in Iran are getting the infection rapidly and they are worried about their families as they are carrying the germs to their homes without the proper safety equipment.

People are burying their loved ones in the makeshift pits. Civilians in Tehran told The Independent that bodies are massing in morgues and when the authorities bury the dead they have started to do so with lime to further prevent the spread of the disease.

In more rural areas, where citizens are largely on their own, one man said worried locals have been hastily burying bodies in makeshift graves without ceremony, and if somebody dies, people are afraid to attend the funeral ceremony and getting close.

The alarming situation in Iran is largely created due to the negligence of their government in strictly imparting out to the public about the awareness and seriousness of the situation. The authorities have failed to quarantine cities and social distancing, according to the people over there.

Although the government has announced total lockdown in the country, people are still seen on the roads and some are even preparing to celebrate Nawroz, their new year.

One of the concerned residents in Tehran has reported that people don’t comprehend the situation and are still traveling around and going on the vacations.

According to the reports shared by The Independent, the number of Covid-19 cases is at least four times higher than being reported,” said Mzahem Alsaloum, a researcher working for western defense contractors.

“The authorities cannot do proper tests, they have been testing only those who have extreme symptoms. They have been unable to impose quarantine or social distancing measures, there are concerns about the New Year.”

Globally the death toll reached up to 9,000 on Thursday and more than 200,000 have been affected with the COVID-19.
