Lahore, 26th May: Devastating cyclone ‘Yaas’ destroyed thousands of homes in eastern India and forced the closure of the airport.

According to reports, Cyclone Yaas wreaked havoc in Eastern India on Wednesday as it destroyed thousands of mud houses, and airports in the city of Kolkatta were forced to shut down.

Cyclone Yaas, which is the second event within a week, brought storm surges to coastal areas.

Authorities reported that Yaas surged up to the speed of 140kph (87 mph) hitting the land, a week after Cyclone Tauktae destroyed the western coast of India, which is already under pressure battling the coronavirus pandemic.

Baaghi TV reported yesterday that the authorities moved over more than a million people to safe places in cars and boats from low-lying coastal areas to take shelter at government buildings, schools, and other strong buildings.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Tuesday that Cyclone Yaas will emerge from the Bay of Bengal and would enter the eastern states of Odisha and West Bengal, and also Bangladesh, on Wednesday.

Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal’s chief minister, told reporters that around 20,000 mud houses and temporary shelters had been destroyed in the state.

After seawater gushed onto low-lying areas of Sagar island in the Bay of Bengal, another state minister was quoted saying that he had not seen anything like this before.

There were reports of a police station in the tourist town of Digha being flooded with water, high tides thrashed up the coastline.

Kolkata’s busiest regional airport has been closed down till Wednesday evening.

Police officials reported saving 10 people after their boat capsized near shore in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district on Tuesday.

The Indian Navy is monitoring ships at the Chilka Naval base and is ready for all kinds of rescue operations.

It is pertinent to mention here that at this time of the year the cyclones in the Bay of Bengal are common and often reach shore, causing deaths and massive destruction in coastal areas of both India and Bangladesh.
