Deadly mass shooting in Colorado Springs leaves 7 dead

Washington, May 10, 2021: The latest mass shooting in a string of similar incidents related to gun violence in the US happened in Colorado last night when a man opened fire at a birthday party in a trailer home leading to the deaths of six adults and then himself. First responders report six dead adults found dead at the scene, with one who was seriously injured and later succumbed to his injuries in the local hospital.

Initial reports by the police suggest that families had gathered at the trailer for a party, when the boyfriend of one of the female victims drove to the trailer home, started shooting the occupants, and later shot himself. None of the children were harmed during the shooting and no motive is apparent as yet. The victims have not been publicly identified by the police.

In his official statement, the Colorado Springs police chief Vince Niski said all the investigators are shaken and that this kind of incident is something everyone hopes never happens in their community. While the mayor, John Suthers said the entire community was in mourning after this senseless act of violence. Both men called for prayers for the victims and their families. Colorado governor, Jared Polis termed it a devastating event.

Colorado Springs has witnessed mass shooting incidents before, with this being the third since October 2015, a year during which there was a random Halloween night massacre and also an attack on a clinic for planned parenthood, within a month of each other. The country as a whole meanwhile has suffered a series of such incidents in recent times, with one in Indianapolis at a FedEx facility, another in an office building in California, and also one in a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. There was also a mass shooting incident at several Spas in Atlanta in March this year.

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, who is a strong proponent of Gun control laws, has been actively campaigning against the possession of mass weapon arsenals by citizens, and has dubbed US gun violence an epidemic and an “international embarrassment”.

According to the Gun Violence Archive records, there have been over 43,000 gun-related deaths, including suicides, in the US last year alone.
