Death by Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is a well-known issue in Pakistan, particularly concerning the forced marriages of women and girls who are then taken out of the country and forced into sex labor. Disturbing cases of elaborate trafficking networks between Pakistan and China have recently been exposed. A growing problem is the arrangement of fraudulent marriages between young Pakistani women and Chinese nationals.
These Chinese nationals deceive Pakistani women, leading them to believe they are law-abiding, financially secure individuals. However, upon arrival in China, many women discover that their “husbands” have purchased them with the intention of exploiting and selling them as sex slaves [source: COMBATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN PAKISTAN]. https://borgenproject.org/human-trafficking-in-pakistan/

In response to the heightened attention on this issue, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency has taken action by arresting and charging 52 Chinese traffickers [source: Brookings Institute: Madiha Afzal, March 2022]. However, the problem extends beyond these apprehended individuals.
There are also distressing stories of students who, desperate to study abroad but lacking the necessary grades and resources, fall victim to human trafficking schemes disguised as student placement agencies. These vulnerable individuals become easy targets for exploitation.
The underlying causes of this human trafficking crisis can be attributed to a lack of promising future prospects, rising unemployment rates, and unequal opportunities for work. These factors contribute to a climate where individuals are more susceptible to manipulation and coercion.

Most recently, a tragic incident occurred off the southern coast of Greece, where a boat carrying dozens of Pakistanis, as well as individuals from other nationalities such as Syrians, Afghans, Egyptians, and Palestinians, sank. Local media reports indicate that the 298 confirmed fatalities were Pakistanis.
Although Pakistani agencies managed to apprehend 10 alleged human traffickers, it is crucial to recognize that the scope of this problem far exceeds the acknowledged figures provided by the authorities.
The issue of human trafficking is an immense tragedy that must be addressed with the utmost severity. The tragedy that unfolded off the coast of Greece is merely a glimpse of the larger problem at hand.
