Deaths in Kurram Agency: Is the Provincial Government Doing Enough?
The Kurram region has a long and tragic history of sectarian violence between Shia and Sunni communities. The bloodiest years, from 2007 to 2011, saw over 2,000 people lose their lives.
This mountainous area, which borders Afghanistan’s Khost, Paktia, and Nangarhar provinces, has also become a haven for militant groups. Organizations like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIL (ISIS) frequently launch attacks, further destabilizing the region.

Recent violence, rooted in a land dispute that spiraled into a tribal and sectarian conflict, has left the local population outraged. Mehsud, a tribal elder, noted, “There is naturally a lot of anger and fury among the people in the area… However, we have the full support of tribal elders not only from Kurram but also from other areas.”
In response, Chief Minister Akhtar Hayat Gandapur has taken steps to address the unrest, including reactivating a jirga (a tribal council) to mediate and reduce tensions. A new provincial highway police force has also been established to secure key transportation routes. Despite these efforts, a high-level delegation, including KP Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, managed to negotiate a temporary ceasefire, but violence flared up again shortly afterward.

The conflict is deeply rooted in historical, geopolitical, and religious complexities that cannot be resolved overnight. However, as per the vision of the nation’s founder, the state’s primary obligation is to maintain law and order. Has the state failed to achieve this in Kurram?
Despite the escalating crisis, the Chief Minister appeared more focused on political battles in the capital, leaving the people of Kurram to suffer the devastating consequences of governmental neglect.
