Delta to resume transatlantic flights amid COVID-19

Delta Air Lines announced yesterday in a statement its plans to resume transatlantic flights during the coronavirus pandemic later this month.

The US carrier said that thrice-weekly services between Atlanta and Frankfurt as well as Detroit and London will launch on May 23, operating as follows:

  • DL17 departing London Heathrow at 1255 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, arriving into Detroit at 1630
  • DL16 departing Detroit at 1800 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, arriving into London Heathrow at 0855 the following day

The Atlanta-based airline had earlier said that it had been losing around $50 million a day because of grounded aircraft and an inactive workforce. Consequently, it announced yesterday that it would be retiring its entire fleet of B-777s by the end of this year.

The cargo will be transported between London and Chicago, via Detroit, but passengers will only be able to fly on the transatlantic stretch of the journey.
