The Tunisian Red Crescent confirmed that dozens of migrants drowned, while another 84 were rescued, in a shipwreck off Tunisia as they attempted to cross from Libya to Italy.

According to the details, the boat had set off from Zuwara, on Libya’s northwest coast, carrying migrants from Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Bangladesh.

“The Navy rescued 84 migrants and 43 others drowned in a boat that set off from Libya’s Zuwara towards Europe,” Red Crescent official Mongi Slim said.

Arrivals in Italy – one of the major migrant routes into Europe – has been falling in recent years, however, it started to pick up numbers again this year. Since the start of 2021, almost 19,800 migrants have arrived against just over 6,700 in the same period last year, Italian interior ministry figures show.

While the tragedy of migrants aspiring to reach Europe continues, at least 23 African migrants drowned off the coast of Tunisia, last month, while trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya to Italy, according to the Tunisian Red Crescent, which said that 70 were rescued.

The navy also rescued 39 other migrants when a second boat sank off the coast of Sfax.
