England mass shooting: 6 dead after shooter rampage in Plymouth

Aug 13, 2021: 6 people, including a child, were killed in a mass shooting in the south-west England’s Plymouth on Thursday, called “shocking” by Britain’s Home Secretary

Two women and three men, including the suspect, died at the scene of the shooting, Devon and Cornwall police said in a statement. Another woman died at the hospital shortly afterwards, police added.

Local Labor lawmaker Luke Pollard said in a tweet that one of the dead was a child under the age of 10. Police had earlier called the shooting a “serious firearms incident” and said the situation had been brought under control. Police added that the incident had nothing to do with terrorism.

The UK has one of the lowest gun homicide rates in the world and a small number of high-profile shootings. It was the first large-scale shooting in the country in 11 years.

Sharon Turner, 57, who lives behind the shooting scene, quoted the Times as saying that a gunman “kicked” at the front door of a semi-detached house before shooting a mother and her daughter.  Turner said she had been told that the man, dressed in black and gray, was armed with a semi-automatic weapon.

After the attack, the gunman escaped from a park behind the house and shot two dog walkers, the Times reported. “The Plymouth incident is shocking and my thoughts are with the victims,” England Home Secretary Preeti Patel said on Twitter.

England’s Devon and Cornwall police said they were called to the Keyham area of the city at 6:10 p.m. on Thursday. Police said the incident was being investigated and the road network in the Keyham area would remain blocked overnight.

The Southwestern Ambulance Service had earlier said it had responded to the incident with significant resources, including Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART), several ambulances, air ambulances, several doctors and senior paramedics.
