English Poet, William Blake’s ‘Teenage’ Engravings Discovered
OXFORD: A series of doodles engraved on copper plates by English poet, artist William Blake nearly 250 years ago have been discovered by researchers using the latest tech, capable of picking out almost invisible etchings, according to Reuters.
Blake, renowned as one of the greatest poets in English history started out as an apprentice to an engraver, James Basire, who made pictorial prints used to make print illustrated books back in the day. Among his most known poems are “Jerusalem” and “The Tyger” – considered staples in English language and literature – and his collections of poems: Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience.

Among the newly discovered doodles is an arrow, a frequent motif in Blake’s works, and a miniature face. According to Mark Crosby, an expert on Blake’s engravings, “When I first saw the face, it was a staggering moment. I almost fell off my chair”. Although, most of the engravings are almost invisible to the naked eye, using the latest high-resolution scanning technology at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, Crosby and his colleagues have managed to uncover the copper plates dated as far back as 1809.
According to the research team, the drawings appear on the backside of Basire’s copper plates – a space usually left for an apprentice to practice. That, alongside Blake’s frequently represented motif, there is not doubt the engravings are the work of the renowned poet.

Mark Crosby, an associate professor of literature at the Kansas State University, whose research will be published in two peer-reviewed journals said, the engravings have allowed us an opportunity to better understand Blake from his younger days, most likely when he was a teenager “who possibly gets somewhat bored easily with doing this sort of very repetitious work, so he’s doodling away”.
