Lahore, 17th August: Social media giant Facebook has banned the Taliban and all content supporting it from all its platforms, Instagram and WhatsApp, as it considers the group to be a terrorist organization.

Baaghi TV: According to details, Facebook says it has a dedicated team of Afghan experts to monitor and remove content linked to the group.

As per reports from NDTV, the Taliban has used social media to spread its messages for years. They reportedly use WhatsApp to communicate with each other.

A Facebook spokesperson told the BBC, “Under the US law, the Taliban is sanctioned as a terrorist organization and we have banned them from our services under our Dangerous Organisation policies. This means we remove accounts maintained by or on behalf of the Taliban and prohibit praise, support, and representation of them.”

Facebook added that a team of Afghan Dari and Pashto-speaking experts has been formed to monitor and remove content linked to the group, which will help identify and raise issues on the platform.

The social media giant said it does not make decisions about the identity of national governments but instead pursues “the authority of the international community”.

Facebook said the policy applies to all its platforms, including its flagship social media network, Instagram and WhatsApp.

Facebook told the BBC it would take action if its account was found to be linked to the group. Rival social media platforms are also examining how they handle Taliban-related content.

With the Taliban gaining control of Afghanistan, technology companies, including Facebook, are facing new challenges in dealing with the group’s content.
