Aug 1, 2021: After Amazon, Facebook has now created opportunities for Pakistanis to run online businesses.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Trade Razzaq Dawood wrote on Twitter that he was happy to see that Facebook has recently launched a marketplace for Pakistan after Amazon. “This will encourage small businesses to sell online. Such opportunities can be a lifeline for micro-enterprises during Covid19,” he said.

Facebook Marketplace has opened up new avenues for small businesses looking for opportunities online,  Faisal Sheikh, CEO for Jack Of Digital told the media.

“Such opportunities reach small businesses not only in Pakistan but also internationally,” Faisal said. “Through these types of markets, local consumers can also easily access products sold in other countries,” he added.

“In addition to access, they also provide business owners with easy payment solutions through local third parties. For example, Amazon, Facebook, and other such platforms initially accept US dollars. But with the introduction of marketplace in Pakistan, people can now pay in Pakistani rupees.”

Faisal added that another advantage of these online platforms is that the government can collect taxes like GST from online sellers. Currently, the government has not been able to collect taxes from online platforms like Facebook that do not have local offices or partners in Pakistan.

“By opening online marketplaces, platforms like Facebook can open an office in the country where small business owners can speak to the help center in their mother tongue, Urdu in Pakistan,” Faisal noted. “This results in increased digital platform and business owner performance.”

The Facebook Marketplace will allow women to participate in the economy without any extensive physical work.

Razzaq Dawood, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Trade and Investment, said the initiative by Facebook is particularly beneficial for women entrepreneurs who want to participate in e-commerce as a first step towards e-commerce with their friends, family and networks.
