At least 52 people have been killed and more than 30 injured in a fire at the Hashim Food and Beverages factory, in the industrial area of ​​Rupganj, in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka.

According to police and eyewitnesses, the fire broke out in the factory at 5 pm on Thursday due to chemicals in the building.

Rescue sources said that the rescue operation would be launched as soon as the fire was brought under control and only after that the number of casualties could be ascertained but it was feared that the death toll could be higher.

Muhammad Saiful, a worker of the factory and a survivor of the incident, said there were dozens of people trapped inside the factory at the time the fire broke out, and both doors to the stairs on the third floor were locked.
