Fake License Scandal: SHC issues stay order to pilots

Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued stay orders restraining the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) from taking action against five of the seven pilots whose licenses were cancelled by the federal cabinet.

According to the details, PIA dismissed seven pilots after their licenses were cancelled by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Saturday. However, right on the first cancellation of licenses by the federal cabinet, the SHC has issued stay to five of the seven pilots.

As per the SHC order sheet, in terms of Civil Aviation Authority Rules 1994 and particularly Rule 342, a complete procedure is given for suspension or cancellation of license, including holding of investigation, which has never been done or completed.

Moreover, it said that the Pakistan International Airlines will take ‘detrimental action’ against the Plaintiff by removing him from service as he has given valuable years of his life in serving the airline.

As a result, according to the order sheet, PIA will not remove the plaintiff from service and not even communicate their decision in media as it may be a cause of defamation.

It is to be noted that last month, Federal Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan, while presenting a preliminary report regarding the PIA plane crash in Karachi, had said 40% of pilots were flying aircraft with dubious licenses.

The pronouncement about fake licenses made global headlines and put the credibility of Pakistan’s aviation regulator and the pilots it licences under a pall.
