First death linked to AstraZeneca vaccine use reported in Canada

Montreal, April 28 2021: The Canadian province of Quebec has reported its first death as result of complication from the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine. The 54 year old woman is the the first fatality in Canada linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine and its known blood clotting side effects.

The premier of the province, Francois Legault addressing news conference said, “I’m sad to know that a healthy 54-year-old woman… died because she was vaccinated. It’s hard to take.” Horacio Arruda, the province’s chief public health officer said that despite employing life saving treatments the patient could not be saved and expired from cerebral thrombosis. But he also added that this should not impact the government’s decision to clear the vaccine for use on those over 45 years of age.

While Chrisitian Dube, the health minister for Quebec said that 400,000 people have been vaccinated using AstraZeenca with 1.1 million doses nationwide and that there was a 1 in 100,000 chance of such an event taking place. To date only 4 cases of blood clots were reported and they were all treated successfully. To build the public confidence on the vaccine, President Justin Trudeau got the shot administered on last Friday.

The office of the Premier also said about 60 soldiers had been deployed to overwhelmed hospitals in Nova Scotia to help care for critical patients while 30 army nurses and health technicians were sent to reinforce hospital staff in Ontario, which is struggling under a recent wave of infections led by variants.

The French speaking Quebec province which has suffered the highest death tolls in the country, the infections rates have finally been slowing down and the government has decided to push nigh time curfew from 8pm to 9:30pm.
