FM Qureshi attends Virtual Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM) 2020

Foreign Minister (FM) Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi attended the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting (CFAMM) held virtually, today.

According to details, the meeting focused on major global challenges — including approaches to the global Covid-19 recovery plan, Climate Change and social tensions as well as racial discourse.

The meeting was attended by the Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth member states. The UK being the Chair-in-Office of the Commonwealth, the British Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs Dominic Raab chaired the event. Secretary General of the Commonwealth Ms. Patricia Scotland also participated in the meeting.

The Commonwealth is one of the oldest political associations of States with member States sharing collective history, similar legal frameworks and common language of operation. Pakistan appreciates Commonwealth’s role in strengthening democratic institutions, promoting peace, increasing intra-Commonwealth trade and its efforts for a more sustainable and secure future.

FM Qureshi made a statement on the Commonwealth Response to Global Challenges and highlighted the challenges posed by Covid-19 and emphasized the need for greater cooperation to fight the pandemic including debt suspension for the developing countries.

Furthermore, he underlined that the Government’s policy of tech-driven ‘smart lockdown’ has yielded positive results. He invited the Commonwealth to learn from the success story of Pakistan, utilize commonalities, launch dialogue for sustained economic recovery, and lend weight to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s call for free vaccine.

The FM commended Commonwealth’s ‘No More’ Campaign and welcomed Commonwealth’s Statement on Racism. He expressed concerns over rise in intolerance, violence, xenophobia and Islamophobia. The Foreign Minister remarked that a state in South Asia was targeting specific religious and ethnic groups in order to foment hatred among communities and was engineering illegal demographic changes in disputed territories.

FM Qureshi reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to address the issue of Climate Change. He elaborated the Government’s initiatives for a clean and green Pakistan. The Foreign Minister underscored that new and additional climate finance was required to pursue an urgent climate agenda.
