Pakistan’s military on Wednesday announced that Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed, the former Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), has been sentenced to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment following a Field General Court Martial (FGCM).
In a statement issued from Rawalpindi, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said the court-martial process against the retired three-star general was initiated on 12 August 2024 under the Pakistan Army Act and concluded after 15 months of detailed proceedings.
The retired general was found guilty on all four charges framed against him:
– Engaging in political activities
– Violations of the Official Secrets Act detrimental to the safety and interest of the state
– Misuse of authority and government resources
– Causing wrongful loss to individuals
“The Field General Court Martial complied with all legal provisions. The accused was afforded all legal rights, including the right to a defence team of his choice,” the ISPR statement read.
The military’s media wing added that Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed retains the right to appeal the verdict before the relevant appellate forum.
Separately, the ISPR disclosed that the retired general’s alleged involvement in “fomenting vested political agitation and instability in collusion with certain political elements” and other related matters is being investigated and dealt with through different proceedings.
Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, who served as DG ISI from 2019 to 2021 during the tenure of the PTI government, was taken into military custody in August 2024. The announcement marks the first time in Pakistan’s history that a former chief of the country’s premier intelligence agency has been convicted and sentenced through a military court.
