Former United States (US) President, Joe Biden, has been diagnosed with an ‘aggressive’ form of prostate cancer, according to reports.

  • Former US President Biden’s cancer diagnoses considered “aggressive”
  • The cancer has metastasized

On Sunday, former President Joe Biden’s personal office announced that he had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer. A statement issued by his team read: “Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms”. The statement further confirmed that the cancer has metastasised to the bone, “characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5)”.

In medical terms, metastasis means the cancer has spread from its primary site to other tissue in the body. In Joe Biden’s case, it means the cancer has spread from his prostate to other parts of the body. The statement further confirmed that although his cancer is a rather “aggressive” form of the disease, it “appears to be hormone-sensitive” allowing for “effective management”. Biden’s office further confirmed that the former president and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his physicians, however, no further comment has since been made.

According to a report by NBC News, a source close to the family has confirmed that Biden, who is living in his home in Wilmington, Delaware is currently considering “multiple treatment options” however, for the time being it is unclear which treatment he will receive.

According to Dr. Alan Tan, the genitourinary section lead of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, “Gleason 9 is, by definition, aggressive, but you don’t know how bad it is unless you know what the PET scan looks like”. Dr. Tan elaborated that this form of cancer is rather common in his field.

Prostate cancer specialist at Northwestern Medicine, Dr. Chris George, said that although he is not among Biden’s team of physicians, it is likely Biden will live for years if he responds to treatment and keeps the disease in check.

Former President Barack Obama also responded to the news saying that he is praying for Biden’s “fast and full recovery”. In a statement issued on X, Obama wrote that former first lady Michelle Obama and he are thinking of the Biden family. He expressed that Biden “will fight this challenge with his trademark resolve and grace”.
