Over 40 cm of snow, approximately 16in, was recorded in Seoul by 8 am on Thursday that led to the authorities cancelling almost 140 flights. However, authorities have lifted the warnings since 10 am.
According to international media, one person was reported dead on Wednesday with another two injured at a golf range after a net of overladen snow collapsed on Wednesday. Seoul’s central airport in Incheon was among the worst affected, with passengers forced to experience delays up to at least two hours. Approximately fourteen percent of flights were delayed and fifteen percent of flights were cancelled on Thursday, according to data released by the Swedish flight tracking website, Flightradar24.
Local media further reported cancellation of 142 flights, as well as suspension of 99 ferries and 76 routes on Thursday. On the other hand, schools in Gyeonggi, near Seoul, might be closing if needed as confirmed by provincial authorities. Experts have suggested the heavy snowfall may be attributed to the unusual temperature of seawaters west of the Korean peninsula.
Likewise, North Korea has also experienced more than 10cm of snow since Tuesday, as reported by the Korean Central Television.
