Jan 4, 2022: Hundreds of Muslim women were auctioned off their photos on an app called Billy Buy in India, sparking outrage among Indian women.

Trolling a woman on social media is the easiest thing for many people to do and this trolling is mostly based on personal attacks. But in harassing Muslim women in India in this recent development, all the limits of decency have been crossed.

Hundreds of Muslim women are being auctioned off on an app called Billy Buy in India. The photos are of women who are Twitter users and have a large number of followers. The app is designed by Github, a company that facilitates online software development.

Users who open the app are shown pictures of women with the tagline ‘Today is your cat bye’, most of which have been edited. After the photos were found on the app, many women protested on Twitter about the harassment that Muslim women in particular are facing in India. Hours later, the Indian government promised action.

The Delhi Commission for Women has strongly criticized the police for not taking immediate action and issued notices to the police to submit a report. And the police are also showing laxity with regard to ‘Billy Buy’. On the other hand, the police stated that they have asked Github for all the details related to the app, including identifying the creator of the app.

In a tweet on Saturday night, Indian Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vishnaw said, “Git Hub has confirmed this morning that the user has been blocked by the CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team), an office under his ministry.” And police officials are in contact with each other for further action. The Billy Buy app came out six months after another website, Sully Deals, was uploaded to Gate Hub. Two complaints were lodged, but no concrete action was taken. No arrests have been made so far.

One of the journalists targeted by Billy Buy, Ismat Ara, lodged a complaint at the Delhi Police Station on Sunday.

Ismat Ara said in a tweet that it is very sad that as a Muslim woman you have to start your new year with this feeling of fear and hatred.

It is noteworthy that this is the second time in a year that an app for online auction of women has been created. Pictures of more than 80 Muslim women posted for auction have been uploaded on a website called ‘Git Hub’ without their permission, with the caption ‘Today’s deal’. Sulli is an insulting term used for Muslim women.

Even then, the Delhi Minority Commission and the Women’s Commission had taken notice of Muslim women being offered for sale online. In this regard, the Delhi Minority Commission and the Women’s Commission had sent a notice to the Delhi Police Commissioner demanding that Muslims.

Action should be taken against those who run such vain campaigns against women, said Zakir Khan, chairman of the Delhi Minority Commission, adding that accused Kanal Sharma and some other accused had used objectionable language against Muslim women. “Such people have defamed Hinduism. They have also hurt the feelings of those who worship goddesses in India. Delhi Police should take stern action against all these accused.”

The 170 million Muslims living in India since the coming to power of Prime Minister Narendra Modi believe that they have become second class citizens.
