Gem thieves rob Hollywood star at Cannes film festival
July 12, 2021: Hollywood star Jodie Turner-Smith has fallen victim to the curse of Cannes – a jewelery thief who regularly haunts the world’s largest film festival.
The British-born actress wore eye-catching Gucci gold and diamond jewellery to the red carpet premiere of her latest film “After Yang” on Thursday. The next morning, her suite at the Marriott Hotel in Riviera Resort broke down while she was having breakfast with her one-year-old daughter. Police told AFP on Monday that they were investigating the theft of jewellery from the hotel, but it was not clear if the jewellery belonged to Gucci – borrowed for the premiere by the actress- or the her own.
At the festival on Sunday, the star of “Queen and Slim” and the series “Night Flyers” and “The Last Ship” made no mention of her loss. But she later tweeted: “I didn’t think I would spend two and a half hours at the police station on my last day in Cannes, but we are here.” This was the 34-year-old’s first occasion at the festival. Cannes has become a notorious hunting ground for international cat burglars, with a member of the infamous Pink Panthers gang suspected of stealing jewelery worth 103 million euros ($ 130 million) from the Carlton Hotel in 2013
A $1.6 million Chopard necklace was stolen at the film festival that year, and less valuable jewelry was lost.
Embarrassed police were found wanting again in 2015 when only a few days before the festival began 17.5 million euros worth of jewellery was taken from the Cartier shop on the Croisette. Luxury brands often give their favorite pieces to the stars to walk the red carpet in bronze. Police said the jewelry taken from Turner Smith’s room was not worth the tens of thousands of euros she initially thought.
There were no signs of forced entry into his room. One of the items taken was Turner Smith’s mother’s wedding ring, according to Variety.
