Widely known as the godfather of artificial intelligence (AI), Geoffrey Hinton has resigned citing concerns of “growing dangers” from developments in the tech field.

In a statement to the New York Times, Hinton, 75, announced that he had resigned from Google and “regretted” his work. Speaking with BBC, Hinton said that some of the dangers of AI are “quite scary”. He elaborated that at the moment “they’re not more intelligent than us… But I think they soon may be”.

The British-Canadian cognitive psychologist, further claimed that his decision to leave Google may also be attributed to his age: “I’m 75, so it’s time to retire”. Widely known for his pioneering work on neural networks and deep learning, Dr. Hinton has paved the path for current AI systems such as ChatGPT. This is because, in terms of AI, neural networks are similar to the human brain in the way they learn and process information. Thus enabling AIs to learn from experience, just like a person would – known as deep learning.

Hinton informed BBC that the chatbot could overtake the level of information a human brain holds. According to Hinton, for the time being, we have access to things like GPT-4 and while it’s not as good “it does already do simple reasoning”. He added that given the rate of progress, “we expect things to get better quite fast. So we need to worry about that”.

On the other hand, in an article for The New York Times, Dr. Hinton referenced “bad actors” who could use AI for their ulterior motives to do “bad things”. When asked to elaborate on this statement by BBC, Dr. Hinton said to imagine undisputed power in the hands of someone like Vladimir Putin who could use it to “create sub-goals like ‘I need to get more power'”.

He continued that he has come to the conclusion “the kind of intelligence we’re developing is very different from the intelligence we have”. Consequently, he added that an essential difference between the human brain and AI is that we are biological systems while they are digital systems and can have “many copies of the same set of weights, the same model of the world”.

Speaking with BBC, the computer scientist elaborated that the problem is all the copies “can learn separately but share their knowledge instantly”. On the other hand, the Chairman of the UK’s Advanced Research and Invention Agency, Matt Clifford said, “There’s an enormous upside from this technology, but it’s essential that the world invests heavily and urgently in AI safety and control”.

Meanwhile, standing by his decision to retire, Dr. Hinton explained that Google, one of the largest tech giants in the world has been “very responsible” while pursuing advancement in AI. Likewise, Jeff Dean, chief scientist for Google, in a statement said: “We remain committed to a responsible approach to AI. We’re continually learning to understand emerging risks while also innovating boldly.”
