Girl Beaten to Death by In-Laws for Wearing Jeans

Neha Paswan, a 17 year-old girl, was killed in Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh on July 19, 2021 simply because her in-laws did not like her daughter-in-law to walk around the village wearing her jeans.

According to media reports, the victim was also the granddaughter of the alleged killers, who was married into the family. The 17-year-old girl used to wear jeans, which was objected to by her grandparents. However, the girl did not agree and had a quarrel with her relatives over this issue.

Angry relatives beat the girl with sticks, injuring her and later killing her. The girl’s relatives dumped her body in a rickshaw under a bridge on a nearby highway. However, the body did not fall down and got stuck in the grill of the bridge.

Police arrived on a tip-off from passersby and the body was later identified as Neha Paswan. Police arrested the girl’s grandfather Pernam Paswan while her two uncles and the rickshaw driver are absconding.

The victim’s mother, Shakuntala Devi Paswan, said that her daughter had been beaten to death by her grandfather and uncles. She added that her daughter had fasted that day and performed religious rites in the evening. When her grandparents objected to her dress, Neha replied that jeans were made to be worn and she would wear them. The girl got into an argument and was beaten to death.
