Lahore, 20th May: Pakistan government totally missed the boat on this one, with the virus cases crossing thousands of number, the situation has gotten out of control.

Baaghi TV: The deadly virus that erupted from Wuhan, China in Dec 2019, started wreaking havoc in China, and then from Jan 2020, it crossed their borders and started spreading globally. In March the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it a pandemic.

Many countries including Pakistan, Iran, UK, US, France got late in closing down their borders thus infiltrating the virus in the country.

When it became apparent that the virus was spreading worldwide from Wuhan, firstly the Pakistan government should have gone into action right away to preempt the spread of the virus in Pakistan.

This could have been done by strict controls at all points of entry along the borders as well as all international airports.

Lockdowns and Death rates

Effective quarantine centers should have been established at all these points, not like Taftan which was a joke.

The entry of all foreign nationals should have been banned and all Pakistani nationals returning home should have been quarantined for 14 days. This could have stopped the infiltration of the virus into Pakistan to a great extent.

Secondly, if the virus had spread despite these measures then a month-long very strict curfew-like lockdown should have been imposed all over the country with the aid of Rangers and Army.

Our government did neither. Now we have reached a stage whereby it is unreasonable to expect that any lockdown, whether it’s smart or stupid, can be effectively imposed because people are starving.

Now a lockdown will not work. The virus has spread anyway. Imposing a lockdown now is like closing the door after the horse has bolted. We missed a golden opportunity to nip this thing in the bud. Now we are in for rough times ahead.

The way our public has come out after a month-long lockdown shows that the people are neglecting the caution against the coronavirus and just like our government, giving a chance to the virus to spread far and wide.

It could be only through people’s smart and effective thinking that can at least slow down the spread of the virus. People need to maintain social distancing, go out only when required, follow the safety measures, and stay at home policy should be adhered to in order to break the chain of COVID-19.
