Lahore, 8th October: This year has given us a good share of surprises (shocks) and has changed our lives as we knew them. From adding masks to our list of necessary accessories to carrying sanitizers in our bags rather than perfumes, our priorities have definitely changed.
But during this long period of self-isolation and almost seven months of being caged in our houses, technology has become our best friend. From kids watching YouTube for hours to adults becoming addicted to Netflix, our dependency on social media and technology as a whole has increased two-fold.
We all knew this in the back of our heads that someday technology will dominate the world, but did you expect it to be this soon?
Before March, we would hear every parent complain that their child uses their phone excessively, but during this period of seven months, everyone has fallen victim to these habits. There is no denying the fact that everyone had a lot of free time up their sleeves during the lockdown, so even if they started off motivated and inspired to carry out some sort of productive task, towards the end of this prolonged isolation, they too became addicted to their phones or laptops.
This lockdown has seriously impacted the algorithm of our world and has changed its dynamics, for, in search of ‘temporary’ solutions to the lockdown situation, schools shifted to online classes, jobs became work-from-home oriented, and socializing completely shifted to virtual means as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Facetime, etc is what kept us connected to our friends and family when we couldn’t physically meet them.
This has become our new normal, humans have evolved and adapted to the crisis that hit them. But the question is: What would’ve happened if the technology wasn’t this advance?
Ask yourself, if you were quarantining in a different dimension without Netflix, TikTok, Zoom, or Snapchat, would you have made it through these seven months?
Perhaps the long-standing debate about technology being useful or harmful can be solved now for surely its pros have outshone its cons in this situation.
