Heathrow Terminal 3 closed, Terminal 4 to be closed in May

Heathrow has completed the temporary transfer of passenger flights out of Terminal 3 (T3), with the terminal now effectively closed “until further notice”.

The airport began the process of consolidating services into Terminals 2 and 5 earlier this month, and carriers including Finnair, Gulf Air, Qantas and Qatar Airways already having switched.

Heathrow has also confirmed that China Eastern Airlines will relocate into Terminal 2 today (Thursday).

Cash-strapped airlines ignore govt’s order to not sell tickets

In a Twitter post the airport said: “Passenger operations in T3 have now temporarily stopped until further notice. All temporary airline relocation from T4 are expected to be completed by early May, when passenger operations in T4 will temporarily cease.”

Earlier this month, Heathrow moved to a single runway operation, “as a temporary measure to increase resilience and safety for colleagues, passengers and cargo”. The move sees the airport alternating between runways on a weekly basis.

Coronavirus: British airlines on brink of collapse

Moreover, Heathrow will pull down the shutters on Terminal 4 next month as the coronavirus continues to hammer flights and passenger numbers.

The last remaining T4 airlines, among them Etihad and Malaysian Airlines, will move over the coming weeks, with all airlines to abandon Terminal 4 “by early May.” The closed terminals are expected to be used to park grounded aircraft.

Last week, Heathrow said that passenger numbers for March 2020 fell by 52% compared with 2019, with demand for April expected to fall by 90%.
