How Chinese React To Newly Introduced 3-Child Policy
Lahore, 25th June: While it’s no secret that China has a huge population of over 1.4 billion people, did you know that its birth rate has been falling for 4 consecutive years?
Now in a major policy shift, China has allowed a 3-child policy in the country in an attempt to avoid a looming population crisis.
After census data in China showed a decline in birth rates, China announced that it will now allow couples to have up to three children.
China has had for the longest time, a 1-child policy. People who had more than one child were punished by the govt. In 2016, they changed it to a 2-child policy and now to a 3-child policy.
Chinese President Xi Jinping approved the latest move at a meeting of top Communist Party officials.
The cost of raising children in cities has discouraged many couples to go for more than one child.
The census released in May this year showed that around 12 million babies were born last year in China, a significant decrease from the 18 million in 2016, and the lowest number of births recorded since the 1960s.
After the census data results were released it was widely expected that the family policy will get relaxed in China.
However, the Chinese have reacted differently to the new policy.
Many of them said, “But who wants to have three kids? Young people could have two kids at most. The main issue is that the living costs are too high and life pressures are too huge.”
Many Chinese do not want to have bigger families now, as generations of them have lived without siblings and are used to small families.
Young couples also said that they’d rather give one child more advantages than spread their income among three kids.
Some Chinese said that at the moment there are too many big pressures in life. Hence, young people are not willing to have more kids.
Many have talked about modern-day ‘workplace dilemmas’ for people leaving on maternity/paternity leave and they say that they do not even get the most basic reproductive benefits.
Meanwhile, more women are now choosing to pursue further education and employment, rather than settle down early to start a family.
