Baaghi TV: Musarat Zahra, a 26-year-old female photojournalist from Srinagar, the summer capital of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has been nominated for the Peter Meckler Award for Coverage and Ethical Journalism 2020 for her courageous and ethical journalism.

According to South Asian Wire, Zahra was honored with the 2020 Anja Naider Nighas Craze Award by the International Women’s Media Foundation in Washington DC in June this year.

Catherine Anthony, founder of the Global Media Forum Training Group and the Peter Meckler Award, says: Musarat Zahra showcases all the talents that my late husband Peter Meckler nurtured in reporters. Fortunately, despite all the dangers, our passion for reporting and our fearless and creative approach to world events made our decision easier.

According to the South Asian Wire, the award citation states that Ms. Zahra was summoned by the police during her work and has been charged with spreading fake news and supporting anti-national elements.

Musarat Zahra told South Asian Wire that this award is another great honor I have received this year.

“This is not just my award, but an honor to all the journalists who risked their lives in the most difficult of circumstances,” she said.

There was a flood of congratulatory messages in the name of Musarat Zahra on social media as well.

Consumers, including members of the journalistic community, continue to congratulate Musarat on winning another international award in the same year.

According to South Asian Wire, Jammu and Kashmir Police in April this year charged Musarat Zahra, a freelancer, with illegal activities for uploading ‘anti-national posts and pictures’ on the social networking site Facebook. The case was registered under Section 505 of the Prevention Act and Penal Code of India. Which has not yet been withdrawn.

Before Musarat Zahra, in May this year, three photojournalists from Jammu and Kashmir, Dar Yasin, Mukhtar Khan and Chini Anand, who are affiliated with the Associated Press (AP), were arrested on August 5 last year.

They were later nominated for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in the category of feature photography for photographing the dire situation in Kashmir.
