Imran Khan’s Future in Doubt, Bilawal Bhutto Employing Brilliant Strategy: Hussain Haqqani
Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan’s former ambassador to the US, believes Imran Khan’s future is doubtful, but Bilawal Bhutto has adopted a brilliant political strategy. On the other hand, he doesn’t know much regarding the possibility of a “surprise” from Bushra Bibi. Discussing Pakistan-India relations post-election, Haqqani remarked both countries should make decisions concerning trade. He added that relations between the two countries were affected because of the cipher case, for which Imran Khan has been punished.

In an interview given to Baaghi TV anchor, Yasmeen Aftab Ali on her program, Yasmeen Aftab Ali Ke Saath, Hussain Haqqani said that the cipher case was in code, and if you compare the decoded version it is not a hard task to break the code. Any enemy or even ally to the state could easily decode the messages that came to the diplomats during this period. He added that since the message had been exposed, that is why legal action was deemed necessary.
The former ambassador further said that it is important for Pakistan and India that there is no killing of each other’s citizens. Expressing his opinion, Haqqani said: I believe that after the elections in Pakistan, the new leadership should take such steps in response to which Modi’s strategy of polarizing Pakistan and the Muslim community would fail. This will be good for India as well. We have to negotiate with India for trade because having trade relations with a neighbor greatly impacts a country’s exports. It is also easier and more economical to maintain trade relations between neighboring countries such as Pakistan and India.

Major political decisions need to be made to re-open trade, and both sides will have to discuss to reach a consensus and make significant decisions.
Haqqani further said that our history is such that we have wasted all possible opportunities that shouldn’t have been wasted. The reality is that the world has been rapidly changing yet we are unwilling to change similarly. He said, we turn everything into an ideological struggle or a slogan and remain entangled in trivial issues. At a time when we could have benefitted from our relations with the US, we wasted an opportunity by engaging in slogans and enmity.
Talking about the political landscape in Pakistan, Hussain Haqqani said that many people say I will not talk to him [political opponent] but are later seen talking. This is why I will not be surprised if, after his release, Imran Khan joins this alliance which includes his political rivals, and parties he used to abuse. The result will be what comes out of the voter’s boxes.
Talking about the election campaign of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), he said that Bilawal is a symbol of generational politics, with four generations of his family in politics – his mother, his grandfather was the prime minister, his grandfather’s father was also called the prime minister. He has inherited politics as part of his heritage, he has studied it and is literate in it. He is also a balanced man with a brilliant strategy – even if he can’t change the votes of the people in this election, he will get the support of the people by the next election.

In response to a question about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), Haqqani said that the PTI should consider how it reached this point. People say that Imran Khan is very popular but popularity alone doesn’t mean politics, it is necessary to lead the people on a path with a sensible strategy, in which PTI has failed and the party’s challenges have not diminished. Will the establishment want thirty or forty independent candidates to continue taking instructions from Adiala by forming a new party? No, that will not happen. This is uncertain – the possible outcomes are not necessarily what we imagine – given the political conditions in the last year and a half Imran Khan has made serious mistakes in reading them. He also made mistakes in reading people. Khawar Manika has hinted at a surprise, will Bushra Bibi also give a surprise, I don’t know. Whether or not it happens, sending Bushra Bibi to the Bani Gala sub-jail will cause political damage to Imran Khan. His future looks bleak.
