ISLAMABAD (Dialogue Pakistan/AFP) – September 13, 2025: The family of Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has turned to the United Nations, appealing for urgent intervention over what they call inhumane treatment in custody.
Through their international legal team, Khan’s sons Sulaiman and Kasim have submitted a petition to UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Edwards, asking her office to investigate and pressure Islamabad to halt practices they say amount to torture and cruel punishment.

The appeal highlights a pattern of alleged abuse at Adiala Jail: long stretches of solitary confinement, poor medical access, contaminated food, and tight restrictions on visits from lawyers and relatives. Lawyers argue these conditions violate Pakistan’s commitments under the Convention Against Torture (CAT) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
“Our father is being subjected to conditions no person should face — endless isolation, medical neglect, and exposure to extreme heat and cold,” Sulaiman Khan said in a statement. “We call on the international community to take notice and demand his release.”

This is not the first international intervention. In March 2024, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention determined Khan’s jailing was politically motivated and unlawful, but Islamabad ignored the ruling. Despite that decision, he remains locked up on multiple charges carrying a combined 14-year sentence — which his supporters say were fabricated to sideline him from politics.
Rights groups, including Amnesty International, have also raised alarms over his deteriorating health, citing cramped conditions, 24-hour surveillance in a tiny cell, and extreme sleep deprivation. According to his legal team, Khan spends nearly 22 hours a day alone with little chance for exercise or meaningful human contact.
Khan, widely viewed as Pakistan’s most popular politician, has been behind bars since 2023 after losing office through a no-confidence vote many believe was orchestrated by the military.
