India is using rape of women as a weapon of war in IIOJK: Kashmiri leader
According to reports, leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference in Indian Illegally-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have lamented that India has used the rape of Kashmiri women as a weapon of war to humiliate Kashmiris and suppress their struggle for independence.
Hurriyat leaders strongly condemned the 1991 Kannaposhpura gang rape, calling it the most tragic event in the history of Jammu and Kashmir. They demanded an impartial inquiry into all such incidents so that the Indian soldiers involved could be punished. It is pertinent to note that about 100 women were gang-raped by Indian troops during a siege and search operation in the Kanan Poshpora area of Kupwara district on the night of February 23, 1991.
Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar, the vice-chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, said in a statement issued in Srinagar that the mass rape by Indian troops at Kanan Poshpora was a shameful act that should be condemned by all human beings around the world. “The perpetrators of such incidents deserve the death penalty,” he said, adding that the people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir have lost faith in the Indian judiciary and they do not expect justice in such tragic incidents.
