India: Lockdown in West Bengal extended till July 31

The Indian state of West Bengal has extended the lockdown in the state till July 31 to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

According to the details, the lockdown in the eastern state was due to end on June 30 which has now been extended for another month.

But as infections spread across the country, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said it was important to “maintain sanctions” to help the whole country.

He said that schools, colleges and universities would remain closed due to restrictions but in some places relaxation would also be brought.

The number of COVID-19 infections in India rose by about 16,000 to more than 456,000 on Wednesday, the highest increase in a single day. So far 14,000 deaths have been recorded in India. There are 14,728 confirmed cases in West Bengal while 580 people have died from the virus.

In Delhi, where a record 3,788 patients were recorded on Wednesday, the army has been deployed to assist medical personnel in treating patients with COVID-19.
