Jan 1, 2022: The government in Afghanistan said India on Saturday provided 500,000 doses of the CoVID-19 vaccine to Afghanistan as part of “humanitarian aid”.

The vaccine was handed over to the Indira Gandhi Hospital in the Afghan capital, Kabul, according to a Foreign Ministry statement. Covaxin is an Indian home vaccine developed by the pharmaceutical firm Bharat Biotech. Another shipment of an additional 500,000 doses will be delivered in the coming weeks, the statement said.

The ministry added that the Indian government was “committed to providing humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people, including food items, 1 million doses of the vaccine and essential life-saving medicines.”

Last month, India provided 1.6 tonnes of medical aid to Afghanistan through the World Health Organization (WHO). The Taliban regained control of the country after the US-backed administration withdrew from Afghanistan in August last year.
