India: Two Boats Collide in the Brahmaputra River

India: Two boats collided near Nimati Ghat in Assam, causing more than 100 people aboard to fall in the water. Rescue teams rushed to the spot upon the news.

According to reports, 87 people were rescued alive while 3 bodies have been recovered. The search is on for the rest. Indian Prime Minister Modi and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi have expressed their sorrow on the situation.

The boat was also carrying children and women who fell but were rescued. Both boats were coming from different directions,  one from Nimati Ghat with the other one on its way from Majuli. There were also about 25 to 30 bikes in the boats which fell into the water and could not be recovered.

The rescue operation by the NDRF and SDRF continued till night, and a fresh operation was resumed in the morning. The Indian navy also participated in the operation.

Assam has issued emergency numbers for information about missing people. Indian prime minister Narendra Modi expressed sorrow over the accident and said that all efforts are being made to save passengers. “I pray for everyone to be safe. Assam government has ordered a state-level inquiry into the collision of two boats,” he said.

Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also expressed deep anguish over the accident. He tweeted, “Sad news about boat accident in Assam. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims. Hopefully, more lives will be saved through relief and rescue in the next few hours.” He urged congress workers to work as a team and extend all possible help to the victims.
