Indians arrested for illegally possessing highly radioactive substance

Lahore, 7th May: Indian police have arrested two men for illegally possessing highly radioactive substance.

According to reports from Indian authorities, the police arrested two men on Thursday for possessing highly radioactive substance illegally.

The authorities further informed that the police seized over seven kilogrammes (15.4 pounds) of natural uranium from the suspected men.

The anti-terrorism squad in Maharashtra revealed that the radioactive substance confiscated is worth around $2.9 million.

Furthermore, an investigation into the case is underway.

The Maharashtra police further informed, “We had received information that one person identified as Jigar Pandya was going to illegally sell pieces of uranium substance, a trap was laid and he was arrested.”

Police added that further investigation into the case revealed that another person identified as Abu Tahir gave him these pieces of uranium.

When this person Tahir was caught by police, a huge quantity of Uranium was recovered from him.

A report from Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in Mumbai confirmed that the material confiscated was highly radioactive.

Soon after, a case was registered on Wednesday

Police said that a report was received from the research center that revealed the substance is natural uranium which is radioactive and dangerous to human life.

An anonymous police official disclosed that the accused are being probed to reveal the source of the seized material and where it was meant to be sent.

According to a local news agency, the two accused appeared before a court on Wednesday, after which both were given into the custody of the anti-terrorism squad till May 12.

It is pertinent to mention here that Uranium is used in making nuclear explosives and medical techniques.
