New Delhi, 24 June: Indian Home Minister Amit Shah detailed a timeline for the future of Jammu and Kashmir and said the delimitation process will be the first exercise followed by elections and then the restoration of statehood.

The comment was made after the high-profile meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with political leaders of Jammu and Kashmir was held in New Delhi. It was the first major outreach from New Delhi since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s limited autonomy and statehood in August 2019.

“We are committed to ensure all round development of J&K,” Shah said in a tweet. “The future of Jammu and Kashmir was discussed and the delimitation exercise and peaceful elections are important milestones in restoring statehood as promised in parliament.”
He said the meeting on Jammu and Kashmir was conducted in “a very cordial environment”. “Everyone expressed their commitment to democracy and the constitution. It was stressed to strengthen the democratic process in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
