Iran and Saudi Arabia “hopeful” after exploratory dialogue
Paris, May 19, 2021: Prince Faisal bin Farhan, minister of Foreign Affairs for Saudi Arabia, has confirmed the establishment of dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
In a rare comment to the press while in Paris, the minister said Saudi Arabia is “hopeful” after the stage of exploratory talks with Iran, a country with which the Kingdom has severed relations 5 years ago. The official level meetings, facilitated by Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi, aim to restore relations between the two countries.
According to Prince Faisal, who is in Paris where he is representing the Kingdom in two international summits, it is still too early to comment on tangible progress but both the sides are hopeful.
The talks which actually began in Baghdad on the 9th of April had remained secret so far until the Iranian government who also agrees it is too soon to discuss results, confirmed they were ongoing on 10 May, news initially reported by the Financial Times.
According to Prince Faisal, he is hopeful he will succeed in his aim to make Iran see their own interest in establishing good neighborly relations. Both sides emphasized again that they were “at an early stage”
When asked what he thought the impact of the June presidential election would be to the political equation in Iran, Prince Faisal commented he thinks it would be minimal.
