Oct 14, 2021: The Israeli occupation’s Jerusalem Municipality has demolished one of the oldest Muslim graveyards in the occupied holy city of Jerusalem.
Mustafa Abu Zahra, head of the Committee for the Preservation of Islamic Cemeteries in Jerusalem, said that teams from the Jerusalem Municipality, along with bulldozers, destroyed a grave yard from Al Youssefiya Cemetery and scattered the bones.
He added that the demolished graves included Muslims who had been martyred in the conflict between 1948 and 1967, and that Israel would face legal action in response to the municipality’s actions.
Palestinians in the area stopped the bulldozer from further destroying the graves and drove it out of the area.
Abu Zahra called on all Jerusalem residents to “unite to save the sites of Jerusalem from the tyranny of the Israeli occupation.”
The cemetery along the wall around the Old City is one of the oldest Muslim cemeteries in occupied Jerusalem and is about 4,000 square meters. The demolition is part of a plan to build a “Bible Garden Path” inside the cemetery of the Israeli occupying authorities, which includes the tomb of an unknown soldier, as well as several ancient and modern tombs.
It is a move that has angered many East Jerusalem residents who have buried their loved ones in this cemetery.
